Assessment as Learning through Portfolio Assessment in the Second Language Writing Classroom

 

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Primary 4 participated in a project conducted by Dr Mak, Assistant Professor from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The research study aims to:

  1. explore how elementary English teachers implement assessment as learning (AaL) through portfolio assessment (PA) in writing;
  2. investigate the attitudes of teachers and students towards the use of PA to promote AaL in the teaching and learning of writing;
  3. gauge the effects of the use of PA to promote Aal in improving students’ writing abilities;
  4. identify the challenges teachers face and support they need to integrate Aal through PA in the writing classroom.

       

      AIMS:

      1. To improve KS2 writing curriculum
      2. To enhance KS2 students’ writing skills
      3. To promote KS2 students’ awareness in writing with better accuracy

      IMPLEMENTATION

      Pre-task

      • EdUHK conducted interviews with Principal Chan, students and teachers.
      • Pre-writing tests were done in October 2021.

       

      Main task

      • Three writing tasks, which were an information report, an informal letter and a diary, were designed by EdUHK.
      • The structure and language features of each text type were taught during the lessons.
      • With the teachers’ guidance, students established achievable goals for themselves at the pre-writing stage.
      • Students reflected upon their own writing by reading teacher’s feedback.

       

      Post-task

      • At the post-writing stage, students were guided to reflect and evaluate their learning progress.
      • Classroom observations were conducted in June 2022.
      • Post-writing test were done in July 2022.
      • The effective use of PA to promote AaL in improving students’ writing abilities were gauged.

      FOLLOW-UP

      • Modify the writing tasks of Primary 5 & 6.
